About our Pastor
I remember repenting of my sin and putting my faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as my Savior when I was six years old. God really used my parents; I thank God for my biblical up-bringing. They built a foundation for sound biblical doctrine; I can’t thank them enough for this. During my childhood, I listened to many teaching tapes with my parents; this also helped build the foundation for my Christian life.
I was a good kid until my teenage years. My parents impressed upon me the importance of having Christian friends. I did not listen. This was the beginning of my sliding. I got into pot and alcohol in high school but was pretty good at keeping this a secret from my parents.
On February 14, 1991, I was stopped by the police and spent a night in jail. For years, God had been convicting me of my sin. Perhaps my earlier profession of faith was not genuine. That night the Lord graciously set His heavy, loving hand upon me. God made clear to me, bringing to mind Joshua 24, that I had to choose Him or the world. I repented of my sin and gave my entire life over to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.
From that wonderful Valentine’s Day to the present, I have had a deep desire and commitment to read, study, teach, preach and share God’s written Word. Jesus Christ became my life. As I have grown in my relationship with Jesus Christ, He has continually shown me that I am not adequate, but that He is.
I believe that God has blessed me with the spiritual gifting of pastor/teacher. Besides a great love for teaching, I have a special joy and delight in proclaiming His written Word through preaching. I praise Him for the great blessing of serving with these gifts by His power and strength alone.
After graduating from San Jose State University, CA with a B.S. in Aeronautics and before attending Western Seminary, I was a corporate pilot for six years in the San Francisco Bay Area. During that time God was impressing on my heart that He was calling me to preach and teach His written Word. While attending Peninsula Bible Church in Palo Alto, CA, God began to provide various opportunities for me to study and teach His written Word. Also, while serving there I was discipled by Ron Ritchie (not Bill Ritchie) and met Hillary, my wife. In 1996, my wife and I felt led to begin full time seminary studies at Western Seminary’s San Jose extension in Los Gatos, CA. While attending seminary, I interned at my home church, Peninsula Bible Church in Palo Alto.
After graduating from Western with a Master of Divinity degree (M.Div) in 1999, I pastored and helped a small church in Waterford, CA for one year. God greatly used this experience to drive me to depend on Him and prepare us for stepping out in faith here at Vancouver Bible Fellowship. I am so grateful that God has put a tremendous desire on my heart to shepherd His sheep and to feed them with His written Word.
God has graciously brought me a fantastic wife. We met at Peninsula Bible Church in Palo Alto, CA during the summer of 1995 and were married on August 3, 1996.
Hillary is a fully committed follower of Jesus Christ, having placed her faith in Him as her Savior and Lord on December 7, 1990. Since then she has been continually growing in her relationship with our Lord, having a deep desire to develop and increase in the knowledge of Him.
Hillary graduated with a Master of Arts degree (M.A.) in Special Education from the University of Santa Clara, CA. Before the birth of our first son, Hillary taught learning-handicapped classes for third graders at Los Altos Christian School for five years.
We have been blessed with two sons and a daughter and are so thankful to God for them. Hillary devotes her time to raising and home-schooling our children. I am very blessed to be married to Hillary as God uses her in so many ways to grow closer to Him.
